I don't know why a dead, empty stare is required for audio playback, but Avatar's just kind of a strange one...

There. It's still nowhere near as done as I'd like, but it's the best I can do with the time I've got (and I've still got to start working on a Conventional Wisdom update after this...) I don't like all the white void background everywhere, but leaving the final panel as sketchy line art works pretty well, I think.

Anyway, is this a New Power as the Plot Demands? I think it's pretty close. I only introduced Avatar's Tape Recorder Powers when it became clear that the rapidly unfolding plot wouldn't make sense without it, but I think it actually makes since. Why NOT give the repository of all human knowledge the ability to play back information? I also like to think she's got USB ports in her ears.

Oh, and about that face: Originally Avatar was just going to "speak" Jenna's words as she would any others, but then I went and started reading Kiwi Blitz and decided it'd be better for everyone if I wend and stole 42's mouth speaker face. Oh, and speaking of the line: there was a brief, terrifying moment where I couldn't remember if Jenna actually had any dialog that Avatar would be around to hear. Fortunately, I managed to find at least one.

And, of course, NEW VOTING INCENTIVE!!!

In the middle panel Avatar looks hilarious. This is a good thing.
Judging by the speech bubble, the quote marks, and that I'm pretty sure Jenna said exactly that earlier, would I be correct in thinking that with this it is like she is playing back a recording?
Either way, Avatar would probably be able to use this to synthesize a voice once she'd heard it enough (like I can with enough samples and certain FOSS)

I had wondered how they got Jenna's voice, but thought it might be answered this page (if it wasn't I would have asked - assuming I remembered :P)

Also, I imagine doing that could creep people out, but I hope you realise that now I have to find a way to edit this ability in somewhere in my fanfic. It's too cool not to use somewhere. (And will save having to have a tape recorder equivalent)
Good as a party trick, and to prove that "There is nothing more useless than a lock with a voice imprint."

i like the rougher style, maybe not all the time, but i do like the panal all the same, and know i find i like avatar more than ever, inderstructable, smart, unknown age (great sense of mystery.) and know mega wepon has to watch himself around jenna... what if she starts sleep talking? will mega wepon do as she says, i liking this idea, "megawepon...zzz... bake me...zzz... pancakes."

The question is, will this be incentive for him to be nice to Jenna, or to kill her?

Stonefoot, March 13th, 2012, 12:18 pm

And the save
....is that with Avatar able to mimic Jenna's voice, it wouldn't do Megaweapon any good to kill Jenna.

I'm just grateful that you posted a comic, whether it's in black or white I don't mind. :3 Switching between colored and black and white actually is pretty nice IMO.
I love Avatar's face in the middle. XD
And how I've dreamed of being able to mimic voices. I used to be able to imitate some voices while singing when I was younger...

Is it weird that I think the little Jenna in the speech bubble looks like the scared guy from the Station?

reynard61, March 13th, 2012, 10:56 pm

Before my voice irrevocably changed to it's current bass-baritone, I used to creep out my sister by imitating her voice.

ACK! So many comments! Sorry I didn't reply sooner!

@Seros Senric: Yeah, it's playback of a "recording" in her memory. In fact, in theory, she could probably reproduce any sound if she wanted, not just voices. Man, imagine the fun you could have writing around THAT ability!

@respectful fan: Yeah, I kept the final panel rough 'cos I liked how it looked that way too. Gives it kind of an "oh, by the way" feel.

@A Nonny Mouse: Oh, you just wait 'till Friday!

@Stonefoot: DUUUUUDE, I didn't even think of that. Nice!

@CarrotSticks: Yeah, I figured it would be a lot worse to miss a scheduled update than to post a not-quite-finished comic. A lesser fix is better than no fix at all, right?

@Antonio: It might be weird if I hadn't kinda botched drawing Jenna there. I dunno what happened, the pencil version looked fine, but then something went wrong during the inking. I tried to fix it up a bit in editing, but I could only do so much. She and Eric do seem to make the same worried expression a lot, though (and there's the whole black & white line drawing effect)

@reynard61: Creeping out sisters is always a worthy pastime.

Hmm... Any sound...
...

Also, I thought I recognised Avatar's expression from somewhere, but couldn't think where. It being taken from 42 from Kiwi Blitz could explain it :)

Avatar having equivalent to USB ports in her ears makes sense. Pretty sure that was the case in Chobits.

Incentive: Kleptomania?
Also reminded of the end of The Ribos Operation, where the Doctor and the thief/con artist steal the jethric from each other a couple of times.

I've even toyed with the idea that Avatar could project images with her eyes, though that seems like it'd be a little over the top (though it MIGHT be funny if the scientists botched that feature, and she never uses it 'cos the pictures are too blurry)

Also, I'm not sure I'd go as far as Kleptomania. More like "total shamelessness". He saw something he wanted and figured he could get away with it. I mean, who would miss it? (clearly, we know better than to think such things about Ichabod)
