Awww, even our gruff Layla can't really argue that point.

...and I don't really have much else to say at the moment, mainly because it's 6:30 Friday morning as I write this and I'm scrambling to get all this stuff done before I leave for Katsucon. But hey, for the first time in I'm not even sure how long, I actually DID get an extra page of Far Out There done! Now we may actually get a Conventional Wisdom update in a timely manner! (Speaking of which, if I'm not on the forums or comments much, that's what I'm doing)

What I REALLY don't know about is if there'll be a Voting Incentive when you read this. I MIGHT be able to whip one up in the middle of all the Katsucon comics... but I really don't know. Meh, if you're reading this, then I probably didn't get it done. Sorry!

More Layla and Tabitha scenes needed to happen. And Layla's expression at the end is priceless.

Seros Senric (Guest), February 19th, 2013, 1:18 am

Poor Layla with that realisation :(

Tabitha isn't quite so good at the cheering people up bit yet it seems...

At least they have friends. Friends are good to have.

Stick (Guest), February 19th, 2013, 6:54 am

Not too sure if it was on purpose but Layla didn't seemed too particular upset in the last two frames; or to be exact, didn't have any change in facial expression. (Of course unless she was in shock...which is highly unlikely)

<Nitpicker> So we are going to have the two conversing while the others are hard at doing what they were to help resolve the scenario which will probably last for another one or two updates at this rate?

<Random Person> Erh...we'll know by Friday?

<Nitpicker> Hopefully.

Blitzkrieg1701, February 19th, 2013, 12:40 pm

Yeah, I worked hard at keeping Layla's expressions nice and subtle, since she's not the sort to wear her emotions on her sleeve (unless that emotion is anger, of course)

Stonefoot, February 19th, 2013, 7:10 pm

Layla is flummoxed. (I hardly ever get a chance to use that word.)
My take on this is that by the time we get to panel 4 Layla has spent a fair amount of time having a friendly conversation with Tabitha (not that Layla would call it that). This has put her (all unconsciously) into a more friendly mood. (Things like that actually do work.)

So I think her normal response in panel 4 would have been "I don't need friends!", but for the moment she has lost her normal level of hostility, and she doesn't say it. She has that sort of blank, neutral look in the last two panels because she has no idea what to say. (A situation I'm sure she is not familiar with.)

Also, I love quizzical Tabitha in panel 5.

Antonio (Guest), February 19th, 2013, 9:40 pm

Character Speculation Time!
I object thy interpretation. The fourth panel is definitely Layla trying, and failing, to be angry; but the fifth one seems more of a "hey, she's right!", like she'd never considered the fact that Trigger is her only friend. (Avatar and arguably Ichabod should also count, but I doubt she'd count them).
The last panel seems to be the implications of that fact sinking in, and presumably moving her to some sort of determination in that regard. Either "be nicer to Trigger" or "get more friends", I'd guess.

Seros Senric (Guest), February 20th, 2013, 1:24 am

@Antonio: Or both.

I also agree that Avatar (and to a lesser extent Ichabod) would count as being her friend, but I don't think she thinks of them that way.
Trigger might be thinking of the Exposition as his new home, but I doubt Layla is thinking that it could possibly be long term. (Which it isn't yet, but you never know)

It has been established that Trigger is the only person Layla has let herself be close to or emotionally rely on other than her father.
And with what happened to her father...

My opinion is that she stopped her initial angry outburst (probably "I have friends" rather than "I don't need friends" regardless of whether or not she thought she actually needs them) because she realised that Tabitha is right - she could use more friends.
Trigger of all people has more friends than Layla does, and he was in a bunker with Layla being his only human contact until very recently.
I think it is also true that she doesn't know how to respond to this. I doubt that she has considered the need for friends much before now.

A socially inept boy is doing better socially than she is, and I think she is now consciously aware of that.

Blitzkrieg1701, February 20th, 2013, 2:06 am

For the record, I imagined Layla was starting to say "I have all the friends I need!" Make of this what you will :)

Seros Senric (Guest), February 20th, 2013, 3:03 am

That is surprisingly fairly middle ground compared to other suggestions...
It definitely fits though, which makes sense seeing as you're the author :)

Any bets on Blitz just being thoroughly pleased at all our wild guessing? :X

Blitzkrieg1701, February 21st, 2013, 1:02 pm

It's a distinct possibility :)

Antonio (Guest), February 21st, 2013, 8:30 pm

It is my belief that the fact that a work of fiction moves its fans to psichoanalize its ficticional characters says good things about the work in question, so he should damn well be pleased.
Which it seems to be the case.

@Seros Senric:
And my point was basically that the last two panels are not her not knowing how to react, but rather realizing she shouldn't react.

And the now absolutely canon answer is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, if you assume she was going to say that Trigger is the only friend one can need, but then realized it is not true.
