Man, this page kicked my everlovin' BUTT. I just kept finding more and more things that needed fixing, and every one I fixed revealed something ELSE that was wrong, until eventually I was too behind schedule to work on the page anymore. Dang it, every year I say I'm gonna get the Christmas stuff finished ahead of time to avoid these situations...

But yeah, now we have the OTHER reason I do these things every year: an out-of-continuity story gives me a chance to drag out all the secondary characters I'm TOTALLY GONNA USE IN A FUTURE STORY SOMETIME I REALLY MEAN IT GUYS and remind you all that they exist. Actually, I toyed with the idea of showing Vashti as one of the performers at Disonar's convert, but it didn't seem like a good idea. For one thing, she's been built up as such a big deal that it'd be hard to buy her playing a super sketchy "charity event" like that. And anyway, Vashti's been popping up in the background long enough that her first "real" appearance would demand more fanfare than a cameo there would allow.

And just in case you were wondering I'd imagine Vashti's Christmas song probably sounds a little bit like this. (though, just between you and me, I've always imagined Vashti's music sounding more like Queen's most pompous moments)

I didn't say this last page cause I was busy, but omg the voting incentive is adorable.

Ichabod's being surprisingly stupid in this comic. She doesn't need to be IN TUNE, nobody can hear her. She does, however, have to know the words. In fact, she not only needs to know the words, she also needs to know that they're something she wants someone else to pour over and evaluate MERCELESSLY for their own ammusement.

Of course, if she messes up the tune significantly enough (such as by being tone deaf), there's still ways to show the fact that she's messing the tune up in comic form. So, yeah, she's got EVERYTHING to lose.

If you want her to perform without a possibility of messing it up in a way that we can tell (without characters outright saying "this is terrible"), stick her behind a keyboard and have her just randomly press keys. That's the only way.

Of course, she still will have to deal with the comic characters, when in out-of-plot moments, knowing how horrible she is at playing piano or something else like that.

four walls
If I remember correctly this is only the third page you've broken the fourth wall in. You broke the fourth wall three times in a row...

@Darius Drake: Ichabod's not being stupid, that is EXACTLY his point. It was her that said "they can't even hear us", he's making fun of that.

Also, is it weird that I keep reading that as though he said "...and her special guest etc..." AFTER Layla screamed? It's not how it's laid out but I can't shake that impression.

Honestly, Ichabod doesn't really care about the whole sound/lyrics conundrum. This is just a way to get a little revenge on Layla for all the ways she's annoyed him.

@Antonio: Probably because, even if Layla's speech bubble is after Ichabod's, Layla HERSELF is in front of him, so she grabs our attention first. (my bad)
