I wish I could have made a more in-depth, story-based joke here... but it's been a LOOOOONG time since I actually rad anything Homestuck-related, and that's way too dense a subject to try and fake it.

I shouldn't talk about dense, backstory-heave webcomics, of course. I just realized that, if you count all the holiday pages, this would be Far Out There's ONE THOUSANDTH PAGE right here. How freaking crazy is that? And that's if you ONLY count the comics on the main page. Add all the Voting Incentives and Patreon Comics and the total count of Far Out There material is... geez, I don't even know...

I Return!
Now I can start commenting again. Or something.

Avatar, I think it's perfectly fine being confused upon meeting cosplayers.

And I can somewhat relate to this. First anime convention I went to, the first day I wore my home-made cloak.
People kept asking me what I was cosplaying as. I haven't worn my cloak to a con since.

Incentives are right, Jenna is cute in those dresses.

Dude, if that had happened to me, I'd have made something up & seen how crazy I could make it sound before the other person realized what was up.

The third or fourth person made a few suggestions on what I could say I was, and so I did end up using some of those when other people asked.
I forget what most of them were, other than "Blanket Death".

But, it was my first con, so I wasn't entirely sure how things worked at that point.

This could have turned out worse - if she assumed she did know what kind of troll was meant - there's not a lot of interpretations of "troll" throughout literature/cinema/etc. that would be considered complementary - they're pretty much all rather hideous and monsterous. That kind of comment could hurt a girl's feelings, I think.

I choose to believe that Avatar has a working knowledge of what Homestuck is, but is bewildered by the fanspeak... which doesn't really come across since I couldn't think of any really bewildering fan slang to use in this context :(

I was thinking more like "despite the ubiquity of Homestuck related content on the internet, ironically none of it survived into the future for her to know about", but your way really makes more sense. Knowing everything does not equal understanding everything - it's like having all the vocabulary of a foreign language but not knowing any of the grammar - you still can't speak it - which is why, even though Avatar knows the meaning of everything Tabitha says when she is babbling mad-science-speak, she often still has no idea what Tabitha is actually talking about. Fanspeak being in many ways similar to Mad Science.
