Dang it, I was SOOOO close to making it to this reveal without anybody guessing it! I mean, I'm sure every single person reading this comic figured out these plot threads were heading to the same point the second I introduced them, because OF COURSE THEY WOULD. Sill, I was all excited that nobody had actually said it out loud... but NOPE! You clever scamps managed to finally make the right guess IMMEDIATELY before the page that would confirm it. Well, at least I didn't have to spend weeks awkwardly trying not to give away that the twist was spoiled this time. Your timing is getting better and better, gang!

Anyway, today's Voting Incentive is nowhere near as elaborate as last Friday's, but still a variation on the established theme.

Oh, and speaking of which: those Conventional Wisdom comics that helped make Friday's update so late are almost done. They're not actually online YET as I write this, but they'll almost certainly be up by Wednesday, so I figured I'd go ahead and put in a preemptive plug, just to avoid the rush.

I thought this plot point was so obviously foreshadowed that it wasn't worth commenting about.

wall-of-text, activate
@Reveal: I'm kind of shocked that Ichabod didn't figure this out himself beforehand. Didn't scientists discover thousands of years ago that "Conservation of Narrative Detail" was actually a Law of Nature in their universe? "Chekov's Gun" is probably actually a charged particle that can build up on objects and people, and is only dissipated when their purpose is revealed.

In fact, I would have expected the conversation to go more like this:

Mariska: "I'm not certain, but I'm 99% sure they're headed to the planet Zorgan 7-b. That's where all the evidence points"
Ichabod: Nope.
Mariska: Huh?
Ichabod: Nope.
Mariska: Why not?
Ichabod: Because that's nowhere near Threiad.
Mariska: ????
Mariska: No, of course it's not. What does that have to do with anything? There's no evidence at all that they are going anywhere near Threiad.
Ichabod: They're definitely headed to Threiad.
Mariska: That's ridiculous! How could you possibly even know that?!
Ichabod: Just a hunch. *smiles smugly*

@Arthur: We try never to let obviousness keep us from commenting about stuff. :)

Of course, as long as Ichabod drops Stilez off at least a half hour or so before the kids get there, the planet will already be a smoldering ruin by the time they arrive.

@Incentive: Then he tries to get Layla to cosplay as Tax, and ends up chasing her around the ship with a marker.

Darius Drake (Guest), July 18th, 2017, 10:04 pm

@ Blitz & Arthur: Sorry about that. I also felt it was that obviously foreshadowed from as soon as she showed up, but Zaealix mentioned the set up and I was compelled to give a correct alternative. At least my assumption that Trigger will think lowly of these guys isn't something that's obvious in the foreshadowing and can easily be wrong.

@ Incentive & Ed8: Nah, Blip can play Tax. The real question is who plays Ichabod. Layla or Avatar?

Ed8, July 18th, 2017, 11:30 pm

@Darius - It's Avatar's turn to play Ichabod. Layla did it last year

Blitzkrieg1701, July 19th, 2017, 5:13 am

Well, Tabitha's on the ship right now, Trigger could always get HER to do it :)

Darius Drake (Guest), July 19th, 2017, 5:58 am

@ Blitz: Yeah, she'll work. But if she gets into it, everyone (or most people) on the ship will end up playing dress up.

Trigger as Stillez
Blip as Tax
Tabitha as Ichabod
Layla as Tabitha
Avatar as Layla
Stillez as Trigger (they both have the same type of explosive wild hair)
Tax as Alphonse
Vengeance as Bridget
Bridget as Vengeance
Alphonse as Avatar

The Captain & Ichabod don't participate due to being Busy and Hiding, respectively. Captain doesn't get a costume due to being in a specific environmental suit and Tabitha not having the props to get the look right. The Blip cosplay had to be cut due to it being more important to have a Bridget Cosplayer, and I almost forgot to include Bridget & Alphonse.

Ed8, July 19th, 2017, 10:40 am

@Darius: This week's special crossover guest star Gilb can handle the Blip cosplay.

Blitzkrieg1701, July 19th, 2017, 3:47 pm

I may have to draw Vengeance and Bridget as each other now

Ed8, July 19th, 2017, 5:00 pm

Vengeance+Bridget is another interesting interaction we have yet to see in-comic.

Though now that I think about it, since one character rarely talks and the other can't, that might be a tough one to do.

Darius Drake (Guest), July 19th, 2017, 10:16 pm

@ Ed8: Do you think that eyes of worship are really that hard to draw? Because Bridget looking at Vengeance with eyes of worship for being cool is how I see that meeting going.

@ Blitz: I hope that idea made up for me outing the foreshadowing that nobody else was outing.

Ed8, July 20th, 2017, 5:48 pm

@Darius: It probably would difficult, particularly with a character who lacks pupils, but then I have no artistic talent, so drawing pretty much anything sounds difficult to me. Notwithstanding that, I don't think that's how it would work, because Vengeance's coolness is mostly something the audience perceives after we have got to know him for a long time and because we don't have to be up close to him in person. In-world, the aura he gives off is creepy / disturbing / unsettling, particularly to anyone when first encountering him (except, apparently Stilez, who is immune). I'm a bit unclear, though, as to whether this is entirely because of him being creepy just in the normal way of a very creepy person, or if it is actually some sort of psychic aura that he is able to generate, or a combination of both. I'm thinking more along the lines of if Alphonse were there also that she would be glaring at Vengeance for terrifying poor Alphonse, considering that he would probably be catatonic by that point.

Darius Drake (Guest), July 20th, 2017, 7:48 pm

@ Ed8: I was feeling that the aura of creepy/disturbing/unsettling while doing nothing would likely be the basis of what makes him cool to her. And I was only considering a meeting between Vengeance and Bridget, with Alphonse being somewhere else.

Ed8, July 20th, 2017, 8:35 pm

If Vengeance's aura is something detectable outside his presence (as Tax's reaction would seem to indicate) then I suppose Alphonse would probably panic and run from the room at least a good 30 seconds or more before Vengeance actually enters and so Bridget probably wouldn't connect the two events. Of course, he would run directly to Tabitha, and then Tabitha would be upset at whoever had scared him. Now, if anyone should be resistant to an aura of creepiness it should be Tabitha, what with all the terrifying abominations of nature she's had to deal with over the years (some of which she may or may not have created)
